New Chief Executive appointed for hospital Trust

Monday 30 June 2008

Andrew Woodhead

Newham University Hospital NHS Trust has today announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive to lead the Trust.

The Trust has appointed Andrew Woodhead, currently Chief Executive of Royal National Orthopaedic NHS Trust in London, to become its Chief Executive.

Andrew joined the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in June 2003 and has overseen the successful bid for the redevelopment of its main site in Stanmore, Middlesex and has led a process of modernisation and productivity improvement moving the Trust from deficit into surplus whilst maintaining high clinical standards.

He has helped shape the tariff for specialist orthopaedics at a national level ensuring that specialist centres such as RNOH have a strong and viable future and is currently chair of the Specialist Orthopaedic Alliance which enables orthopaedic hospitals to share best practice.

Andrew has 25 years experience in the NHS and has been Chief Executive of St Ann's Hospital in Tottenham and Acting Chief Executive at Barnet General Hospital in North London Early on in his career he worked in East London including Newham General Hospital where he was the Deputy Hospital Administrator and at St Andrews Hospital in Bow where he was the Hospital Manager. Prior to joining RNOH he worked on the future of specialist services in West London.

Commenting on his appointment, Andrew said; "I am delighted to be joining Newham University Hospital NHS Trust. It is clear that the Trust provides a range of high quality services for local people, and that huge progress continues to be made in improving these and developing stronger partnerships. I am excited to be joining as the Trust moves towards Foundation Trust status, with the opportunities that this will bring for involving the people of Newham even more strongly in shaping and enhancing services into the future."

Mike Smith, Chairman of Newham University Hospital NHS Trust, welcomed Mr Woodhead saying: "Andrew has a strong reputation for championing quality improvements as well as an impressive track record in delivering financial obligations. I am sure he will take the Trust from strength to strength as he drives forward our ambitious vision for the Trust. Having worked in Newham and East London previously, Andrew has a real understanding of the needs of the local population, and I know that he is eager to work closely with our local Primary Care Trust and local authorities. Andrew will commence his post from 1 August and I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Board to thank Graeme Jolly who has been Acting Chief Executive since January for leading the organisation through this period. Graeme and Andrew will be working together in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition."
